Pet PennHip & OFA Submission
At the age of two, we can x-ray your dog’s hips to check for hip dysplasia. These radiographs will be sent to the OFA, where board-certified radiologists will assess and grade your dog’s hips to qualify for OFA certification. For a complete radiographic evaluation, your dog must be positioned correctly. Thus general anesthesia is necessary to make the procedure less upsetting for your dog.
The PennHIP method for assessing canine hip dysplasia, which may be done considerably earlier (at 16 weeks of age) than OFA certification, can be used to take an x-ray of your dog’s hips. Your dog’s hips will be x-rayed in three different positions to examine how loose the joints are and assess the possibility of osteoarthritis. This procedure will require general anesthesia. Consider using this test to aid in the earlier selection of suitable breeding candidates if you are a breeder. Consider utilizing this method to assess the future soundness of your dogs or puppies if they participate in sporting competitions.
